Why are so many NRMA chargers broken?

And why for so long? What is going on ? Who is going to fix it and how? when?

Hi DWil, please understand that the NRMA team clearly understands your frustration here.

Out of the total 61 chargers in the network currently there are currently 7 out of service, of which 5 sites are offline as they are a single charger site and 2 sites have one charger working (Lithgow, Jindabyne). 

The NRMA’s charger supplier Tritium is having difficulty sourcing parts in a timely manner to replace faulty components in the chargers. These parts are coming from overseas and disruptions to this supply chain are causing further delays. Once the parts arrive, Tritium repair the chargers, as all the chargers are under warranty. NRMA is working very closely with Tritium to have these repairs made as soon as possible and NRMA will provide and communicate in PlugShare and on the NRMA website. The global supply chain issues referenced in the article that Louis shared are very real but we are doing everything we can to mitigate them and look forward to improving reliability as soon as possible.

We understand how these outages impact our community, so rest assured we are highly focused on improving reliability and also looking at new ways to ensure real time data is provided.

@Dan Alex​ .........good to hear NRMA are trying their best and also posting feedback on the chargers in question....like mynrma.... posted on plugshare on 6/10/22 for the Temora charger which has had issues since at least 1/10/22. 

"Hi all, We are experiencing issues with this charger and have logged a case with our supplier. A technician will be dispatched and will hopefully be back online as soon as possible. Please check the status of nearby chargers when planning your route along with govt traffic updates. We'll update as soon as this site is up and running."
A quick question, do the chargers not have the technology to remotely be able to let the Network Supplier[eg..NRMA] know that there's an issue/fault with the charger?

@Enforcer​ The supplier isn't NRMA, it's Tritium. These POS chargers are still under warranty, so if NRMA wants them fixed cheaply, they refer it to the supplier. If NRMA wants them fixed quickly, they'll need to buy and maintain their own spare parts inventory, and hire their own traveling technicians - and that's expensive! These are free chargers. It's unfortunate, but this is how it is.

I for one would be glad to pay the going price if it meant NRMA would install more reliable chargers from another vendor, and keep inventory and traveling technicians on hand to fix the unreliable Tritium ones. Give it time. And try to keep good spirits and a flexible schedule. And carry lots of adapters for backup usage! And upgrade your NRMA membership & keep it paid up for their members tow truck service!

As for PlugShare updates from NRMA, those are clearly made by humans. And they are made for extended outages. The existence of negative check-ins from drivers is probably enough to tell everyone that something is wrong. The subsequent advice from NRMA just confirms they know too & that something is happening. They probably do have automated notifications of failed sessions and error codes, at least at chargers with mobile data reception. But if it's like other systems I've been responsible for elsewhere, those error codes are often unhelpful and don't necessarily mean the site is unusable.

NRMA are doing a good job with DC fast charging across the state, but with the ever increasing amounts of EV owners coming online can NRMA state to duplicate these sites, starting with the most used / busy locations and please do not use Tritium,

I'd suggest ripping out and replacing 2/3rds of the Tritium chargers. Use 1/3 to duplicate the existing sites, and start ripping the other 1/3 apart to use them as spare parts.

To one and all.....yes the finger seems to point to our Australian Tritium chargers back here but elsewhere in the World they love them. Maybe we get the test/experimental units installed!

Hi - it appears more chargers have failed over the festive season along Pacific Highway heading north towards Gold Coast such as Thrumster and Nabiac. Maybe these could be repaired soon?
