Off-grid EV charger showcased at solar race

Off-grid EV charger showcased at solar race

NRMA's prototype off-grid electric vehicle charger deployed for solar car race ahead of national network rollout:

- 2, 75 kW chargers powered by a hybrid system of solar, battery banks, and a backup generator

- Diesel-powered generator only switches when solar panels aren’t producing enough power

A trial is currently underway in South Australia.

Do you think that remote locations should also have EV infrastructure? Where would you like to see more sites?

This excellent initiative has recently been the subject of much social media disinformation. Critics (well, brazen liars, really) are sneering at it and implying that it is running diesel 100%. From this, they conclude that all EV drivers are environmental hypocrites.

The truth is that the diesel is there as back up to solar and batteries, which will be providing most of the energy. In principle, the diesel could be very infrequently used biodiesel.

Thanks @PeterCa , sadly this has also seen international media attention, although we've tried to set the record straight to confirm the usage and purpose of having a back-up solution in an area where there's not gris access.

Not sure if you've also come across our explainer, but it's definitely been helpful to share:
