Discussion about the NRMA EV fast charging network
In this topic, we are hosting a discussion around the NRMA EV fast charging network. We're interested in hearing from the community about anything you would like to raise, for example:
- About the NRMA fast charging network
- Feedback and faults about our chargers
- Your charger location wishlist
- Charger inspo – Places to eat and local attractions near our chargers
Since 2017, the NRMA has been rolling out the largest electric vehicle charging network in Australia. More than 50 electric car charging stations have been installed across major NSW roads such as the Hume, Newell, Sturt and Oxley Highways, as well as the Mitchell, Pacific, Olympic and Great Western Highways.
Our goal is to continue to grow the network so that Members with EVs will be able to confidently tour all of NSW and ACT and beyond. We are investing in the NRMA fast charging network to help to future-proof our regional communities and keep you moving now and into the future.

I drove between Newcastle and Dubbo this week and noticed there is no public chargers at all on the Golden highway which is a very popular road. So you have to detour to Scone and rely on the popular single charger there which also covers the New England Highway. An option in Merriwa would open up exploring the area and give another option to get out to Coonabarabran as well as more confidence to people going to Dubbo. PS thanks for the 75kW upgrade at Wallsend! It is great having the ability for cars to cycle through faster. Looking forward to when they are paid with idle fees to stop selfish people leaving their cars on for hours.

What would probably help the EV owners of the ACT the most is a charger at Braidwood. There are lots of chargers on the Princes Hwy and Monaro Hwy, but nothing if you are cutting across. I have a 2015 Leaf with 22kwh of battery. The trip to the coast is currently not something that is possible, but a charger at Braidwood would help even owners of newer EV not get caught out.

We recently completed a 2,922km trip from Sydney through Canberra, Wagga, Hay to the Barossa Valley then return through Hay and Cowra.
On that route, we used several Destination Chargers at Motels and were very appreciative of the NRMA chargers strategically located along our route. We are NRMA members and will be even happier when some of the single sites get upgraded to two units and also when NRMA starts charging money as well as having an App to show availability.
We had problems with the Hay charger which stopped after 20 to 30 mins three times. Then it happened again on the return trip. We relinquished the charger to another gentleman who was more desperate than us and ti stopped four times for him. Very frustrating.
I put a comment in PLugshare about the problem but not sure if NRMA would have read that, hence posting here.

Bravo to NRMA for getting the Braidwood chargers up and running at long last.

With the new installation of Tesla chargers at Sovereign Place (Thrumster), should we be concerned about the NRMA installation in that same carpark?

What was the rationale for limiting the CHAdeMO plug at Mittagong to 8kW? There are several comments on PlugShare from LEAF owners who were surprised (to put it politely) when they turned up to charge at Mittagong.
That charger would have to now be classified as a destination charger. No way can it be used en route for highway travel. Please make sure that the PlugShare entry is updated so that people know they will not get 50 kW.

A quick comment on the NRMA App, it looks to only be available on the Australian App store, which means visitors from other countries can't down the app.
I've seen that the majority of not all chargers exclusively use the App Now.
Does this completely exclude tourists from using EVs?
Or is there an alternative way to charge with NRMA?

Just wondering how the NSW round 1 chargers are going. MRMA got approved for Bogangar ,Caringbah , Cooma , Euston , Jamisontown, Molong Port Macquarie, Prestons, Queanbeyan, Rouse Hill. I believe these need to be in place by the end of 2024

Yesterday I used the Armidale NRMA charger, which highlighted some of the deficiencies of this and other chargers in the network.
It was raining moderately, so no shelter while charging other than sitting in the vehicle. The cable is too short, so parking at an angle to enable it to reach and hanging it over the side mirror is always necessary here, and the parking bay isn't particularly wide with a thick hedge on one side, so no chance of parking side-on for us.
Worst of all is the drainage, I had to stand in a large puddle, about 50mm deep at the low point, so my shoes were saturated. I'm not sure there are many electrically knowledgeable people who would recommend standing in water while it is raining, with a 400V charging cable in hand!
At least I did get to use my charging port rain cover ;)
Just as we reached 75% SOC a Volvo EV pulled up near us, I jumped out and asked them if they wanted to charge, telling them we were done. The woman said they were unable to tell from the NRMA app that the charger was in use, but she didn't realise you have to get well down into the menu to selecting a plug in order to see whether or not it is in use. A more user friendly option for users would be for the status to be visible initially, without having to select a plug type. They were able to park side-on to avoid having to stand in the puddle.

I am a loyal NRMA member and use NRMA chargers wherever possible. I drive Canberra to Orange return regularly to visit my elderly father.
Unfortunately, the Cowra NRMA charger is unreliable. Today I kept getting an error message when I tried to use it. After numerous phone calls with NRMA support staff who said it appeared to be working (several other people weren’t able to charge) I drove white knuckled to Yass NRMA charger, arriving with 2%. Thankfully, it’s fine. No dramas charging at all.

Hi, the new NRMA facility at Lithgow is not yet available (nor is Evie). Is there an ETA for the new NRMA charger/s at Lithgow?
